Headline Indicators for Global Climate Monitoring

چکیده
Abstract The World Meteorological Organization has developed a set of headline indicators for global climate monitoring. These seven are subset the existing essential variables (ECVs) established by Global Climate Observing System and intended to provide most parameters representing state system. include mean surface temperature, ocean heat content, acidification, glacier mass balance, Arctic Antarctic sea ice extent, CO 2 mole fraction, level. This paper describes how well each these currently monitored, including number quality underlying datasets; health those observation systems used estimate indicator; timeliness information; recent values can be linked preindustrial conditions. aspects vary widely between indicators. While temperature is available in close real time changes from levels determined with relatively low uncertainty, this not case many other Some (e.g., extent) largely dependent on satellite data only last 40 years, while some acidification) have limited observational bases, others glacial balance) year or more arrears.

Integrated monitoring of mountain glaciers as key indicators of global climate change: the European Alps
The internationally recommended multi-level strategy for monitoring mountain glaciers is illustrated using the example of the European Alps, where especially dense information has been available through historical times. This strategy combines in situ measurements (mass balance, length change) with remote sensing (inventories) and numerical modelling. It helps to bridge the gap between detailed...
متن کاملIndicators for monitoring hunger at global and subnational levels.
This paper presents three different hunger indicators and outlines how they can be used to assess the extent of food insecurity in population groups globally and within countries at community, regional, or other subnational levels. Hunger refers to the supply, access, consumption, and intake of food at levels that are insufficient to fulfill human requirements. If the requirements are not met t...
متن کاملEvaluation of meteorological, hydrological and groundwater resources indicators for drought monitoring and forecasting in a semi-arid climate
Drought as a natural phenomenon characterized by a significant decrease of water availability during a period of time and over a large area. In recent years, droughts and its frequent in arid and semi-arid regions like Iran on the one hand, and water demand has been rising on the other hand and, as a result, their impacts are being aggravated. Therefore, the meteorological and hydrological...
متن کاملA global framework for monitoring phenological responses to climate change
[1] Remote sensing of vegetation phenology is an important method with which to monitor terrestrial responses to climate change, but most approaches include signals from multiple forcings, such as mixed phenological signals from multiple biomes, urbanization, political changes, shifts in agricultural practices, and disturbances. Consequently, it is difficult to extract a clear signal from the u...
